    everyone seems to agree on methods for converting mpeg1 to avi (with virtual dub etc), but i have never seen a "definitive" guide to converting mpeg2 to avi - plenty on dvd->avi or dvd->mpeg or dvd->svcd and so on, yet none on taking an actual mpeg2 file and converting it to an avi and what the best programs are to use for this (do NOT say vidomi!). can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Stick that puppy into TMPGEnc. Add the filters, select File-->
    Output to File-->AVI file, in the settings choose your codecs. Name the file, Save, and voilá!
