Canopus ADVVC-100 or Capture though DV Cam what the Diffrenc

Can someone tell me if there is a difference between capturing with a production like Canopus’s ADVC 100 Analog to DV converter or just hooking the VHS to the camcorder and capturing with a fire wire output?
