  1. I have a problem converting my tivo shows to dvd. I wont go into how I get the episodes off my tivo (not sure about the policy on this)

my problem is I can get everything sync'ed up and burned to dvd but once I play it the people are jerky when they move.

It is very subtle but enough to be annoying.

I recorded it on medium quality on my tivo and tmpgenc suggests 2k bitrate when i fire it up but I bump it up to 3k and I am using the NTSC DVD wizard.

Is bumping up the bitrate my problem?

    thank you

  2. Just a guess, but try changing the interlace setting, from A first to B first or vice versa.

  3. thanks bugster... i would have never thought of that. not very familiar with interlacing. no matter how many times i read about it doesn't sink in.

  4. Also, If you're going to reencode, you really want to use the "Best" setting on Tivo - anything less will be pretty blocky.

  5. If you are doing full resolution DVD (704x480) then a 3K bit rate is probably too low. I suggest trying 5K-6K and see if that helps.

I encode to half-resolution (352x480) and use 2-pass VBR w/2800 avg and it looks pretty good (from the S-video out of a Directivo). Plus, you can get almost 3 1/2 hours onto a DVD that way.

  6. i'll be recording everything in best from now on. I recorded the current shows in medium because my only option was SVCD which will only handle medium quality.

    i didn't think i'd get a dvd-r this soon.

  7. ok... i tried a 2-pass VBR of 4000 using the B First option and I still get the same result.

not sure what to do now.

  8. What brand/model DVD player are you playing it back on?

Have you tried playing it back using a software DVD player on your PC; do you see the same problem there?

What are you using to author and burn the DVD?

Sorry .... so many questions .... so few answers.

  9. sorry for the vagueness... just not sure how much of the topic i can discuss.

if its ok i'll write out my entire process.

I am using a XWave DVD player. I can't remember the model number but I've gotten it to play my home movies on dvd-rw just fine.

I'm using a no-brand dvd-rw that came with my pioneer 104. the same dvd i've tested my home movies on.

i am using dvdit to author the disc because it has the option to build menus which i will need.

i'm trying to get a greg the bunny episode recorded on medium quality to play right.

i've never audio sync problems... just these slight jerkiness.

i played the mpg in windows media player and i can see the jerkiness in there too.

i really thank all you guys for helping me.

  10. Hi Staniks,

I have a Philips SA with the tivonet card and use this process:

    *Edit Resources to 720x480 or 352x480 4.8M.
*Extract with tyTool to m2v and m2a.
*Convert audio from 32khz to 48khz with BeSweet (.mpa extension)
*Import files into SpruceUp (make sure they have the same name).
*Put in chapters and burn to DVD.

I have created many DVDs using this method. I find that any show over a hour and half does lose a sync a little at the end.

  11. Mickey:

I wound up doing just that eventually. I used tmpgenc to convert the audio.

    questions for you:
    is besweet that much better?
what do you do about the audio delay?
my video is at 352x480, after i burn to dvd-rw and launch power-dvd is says there is an error on the dvd and wont play but play fine on my standalone, does this happen to you?

i multiplex the m2v&m2a in mpgenc and then edit with mpgenc and the de-multiplex and then go to spruceup.

    thanks guys

  12. My 0.02$

I have a SA UK tivo(2.5.1), running TyTool5, Tivo set to best quality

Download the m2v and m2a to the harddisk

DVD2AVI the m2v file to a d2v file, and run the program that turns that in to a avi (Can not remember the name)

Use BeSweet to convert the m2a file to a wav of 48Khz

Load both of avi and 48kHz wav in to virtualdub

---------- IMPORTANT : This removes the Sync problem--------------
Under video click frame rate and set the the video to be the same length as the audio.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cut out the unwanted ads and the bit before and after the program you want to burn to DVD.

    (Dont delinterlace)

Start frame serving from VDub, load up the TMPGEnc go though process, making sure Field A first for SA tivo`s and Field B first for the DTivo`s (So I have read)

I prefer 2 pass VBR High Quality, let it run for a while (Long while)

Then use your fav burning program.

    Paul

PS I know that calls for recoding, but I prefer NOT to having all the ads + the audio sync problems, I think the quality of the video is good, much much better than VHS
