First off, I'd like to let everybody know that I am NOT a newbie.
Now that that is out of the way, here's my situation:
Windows XP killed itself, HAL.DLL went corrupt. I had formatted it with FAT32 and when I had to reinstall, I reformatted it with NTFS, but kept Windows XP. I tried to rip DVDs with Smartripper (as I have done for quite some time), but it said there was no ASPI access, then some files were still locked. I played the DVD, and then the files were unlocked. It would rip it, but it would take a longer time finding the key than it had before. Also, before HAL.DLL went corrupt, Smartripper wouldn't give me an ASPI error. Recently before it went corrupt, it DID, though. Upon the reinstall, there is still an ASPI error.
OK, so I got some DVD rips. Now, I have to encode them. I have used XMPEG4.3Alpha and XMPEG4.5 for quite some time, perhaps a year. I use the DiVX 5.0.2 codec and the Radium MP3 codec, to create 128Kbps 48kHz Stereo MP3 audio. I also created them in full resolution, 720x400 [I would also clip the 2.35:1 widescreens, to 720x312].
Well, now, XMPEG would give an error whenever I tried to encode. It is the box that says "FLASKMPEG WARNING" for the title (this is XMPEG, which is based off of FlaskMPEG), and for the message it says "An error occured while trying to generate the output file. Check that you're not using the output file or the program is setup correctly." [OK]
This is weird!
Well, oddly enough, the hard drive then broke -- for good. Got a replacement last week.
Now, I've just started to do DVD ripping again. I have got DiVX5.0.2 codec, and the Radium codec installed, just like before, when it worked.
I also have got XMPEG4.3 Alpha, XMPEG 4.5, FlaskMPEG 0.60 Preview, but only XMPEG4.3 installed (the other two I tried).
The exact same problem happens! I have no idea what this is! I've checked everything, twice. I select DiVX 5.0.2 Codec, set it up just like before. I select MPEG Layer 3, 128Kbps/48kHz/Stereo, just like before! I even try disabling audio. I select the Miha Fast Reference iDCT, just like before. I choose 720x400 resolution, 23.967fps, recreate progressive frames, just like before. I choose the same post-processing settings as before.
This is so weird! There is absolutley nothing wrong. This error occurs in XMPEG4.3, 4.5, and FlaskMPEG0.6.
To top it off, the DVD rip process is messed up, because fo the ASPI thing!
I need help, badly.
Could it be the ASPI? Could it be because the .VOB files I rip are stream processed, therefore they don't have all the audio streams? Could it be because I am using NTFS, and have 4kb blocks? The .VOB files are under 4GB.
Aaarrrggghhhh! I'm stumped, and I have never ever been stumped with anything about PC's before!

Ah ha! I have fonud the culprit.
It is very strange.
It won't work if I choose to not process audio. It won't work if I choose to decode audio and use MP3. It will work if I choose to decode audio and use Uncompressed PCM.
Have to try copying the AC3 stream...
