  1. My Intervideo WinDVR software can capture at a setting of 1/2 DVD or 1/4 DVD.

Is this a standard that will play in DVD players like VCD and CVD?

If by 1/2 and 1/4 dvd you mean 1/2 resolution and 1/4 resolution then probably not. The only valid dvd resolutions are 720x480 and 352x480 (NTSC.)

Half DVD could be considered as a "picture" with a 4:3 ratio and 352x480 resolution (NTSC). Bit rates up to around 4500kbps, and LPCM audio (for greatest compatibility). If you author it to a DVD as a DVD (not VCD,SVCD,CVD,etc.), it should play fine in most players. The quality is somewhere in the neighborhood of VHS without the drop-outs and sync glitches.

    Legal resolutions for DVD - Video: 720 X 576/480, 704 X 576/480, 352 X 576/480.
Also legal resolution is 352 X 288/240, but it has to be mpeg 1! No bitrate limitation that way, only GOP limitations (the usual rule: 15 Pal, 18 NTSC).

My extended tests show me that mpeg 2 files with this resolution 352 X 288/240 are also playable. Still to find out if that happens because of the flexibility of the players I tested or because the resolution fools the player and thinks that it is mpeg 1.
