    Just a quick ? for all that might want to help me out.
    I'm want to know the BEST encoder for avi to mpeg. I'm using Nero which I think is not bad, but my system is old until I upgrade to new pc so it take forever to convert. Also is this true that the avi is say 540mb and when you convert to mpeg it make it larger correct? That mean going out to buy DVD-R. Anyone can help out either email or this forum.

    Q: Why make a mpeg?
    If A=VCD then:
    {
    • Size of AVI not related to size if MPEG;
      Length of movie linearly related to size of mpeg at fixed bitrate;
      Constant bitrate related to quality of output;
      bitrate=1150;
      Length of movie on 1 CD=(almost) size if CD-R in minutes
    }
    Best free mpeg1 encoder=TMPGEnc;
    Best authoring / burning app for VCD=VCDEasy;

  5. VCD and SVCD is burnt to CD in a different mode from that used for audio and data CD's. As a fairly accurate guide on what you can get on a CD, 74 min CD = 740Mb, 80 min CD = 800Mb when burning (S)VCD.

    Hope this helps

    I guess your svcd is a tv show of about 45 minutes else your video bit rate is way low otherwise your (mpeg2) svcd would be larger than 779 mb. As was stated, your current file of 779 mb will fit on an 80 minute cd or cdrw. (trust us) when burned as a svcd but not as an iso data file.

    We know you meant 4 gig (not mb) for the DVD writer.

    Read up on DVD writers or its you who may get burned instead of the disks (sorry I couldn't help that). There has been a lot of information posted on this forum in the last while even the last few days concerning compatibility issues between brands and issues with standalone and PC DVD players. There are new models coming out very soon which may address some of these issues.

    Unless your funds are unlimited. Buyer beware.

    If you have a cd burner you may want to practice with the cheaper cd/cdrw disks making vcd/svcd instead of the more expensive DVD disks.
    There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

    so i must have messed up on the settings on Nero, so i need to increase my video bit rate in the settings, and im sure i burned as a svcd file then my movie will fit on the cdr, even though it tell me i need a disk with more space, i used nero for my encoding and my burning so any more info you can give would be great

    Here are a few reasons why you could get the msg saying it needs more space:

    1- You are using a disk with something else already on it. (non-blank)
    2- You are using a 74 min disk instead of a 80 min disk.
    3- You did not select SVCD as file type for the burn and Nero thinks you want a mpeg as a data disk.
    4- When you first selected SVCD in Nero you forgot to change the disk size to 80 min. (there is an option that asks under encoding bitrate.. try to fit to disk).
    5- Your file is greater than 800 mb ( possibly up to 808mb)

    You have eliminated option 5 in your statements but may want to check that again. Option 3 is unlikely since you use Nero to convert.

    The other 3 only you would know that.

    On the question of avi to mpeg:

    Best to read the guides on the left and check out the other tools links to convert DVD or avi to vcd or svcd. You will get a wide variety of opinions about each one as to how well they perform. The one thing that is true is that they all work. The other considerations have more to do with the quality of your source, the time, individual preference...your standalone player and how much you are willing to spend on software (If at all).
    There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
