Ripped a DVD with Smart Ripper, then used DVD2AVI to get the D2V and WAV files. DVD2AVI said it was a 20.000fps PAL movie.
Then I used TMPGenc and selected PAL 25fps. But got a jumpy motion in the movie. Checked what it was: a Frame was repeated every 4 (exactly the same frame).
Tried to Deinterlace, Detelecine, Invert the fields, didn't work, just the same. Tried also to use NTSC 23.997 fps, same but every 5 frames.
Tried then to check the option DO NOT FRAME RATE CONVERSION, it worked as far as motion is concerned, but the audio was out of sync.
Now I have the idea that when converting from 20fps to 24 or 25 the additional frames MUST come from somewhere, but since I did not find anything on the subject, and these are my first conversions, I really am lost.
Anyone can help?
Thanks
Ciao

Maybe you should download a few more programs, some work better than others.
I use smartripper also, but use DvdX "1.7" to convert the VOB files, its just as fast as TMPGEnc but it can load the Ifo's. DvdX V2 can sometimes give syn problems, so 1.7 should be used untill they fix it.
I have used DvdX to convert 20,29.9 etc to 25fps without any problems, with just a little judder sometimes on fast pan's -
Thks King. Tried immediately.
With DVDx 1.8: first I ripped with Smartripper (Sefy recommends on certain DVDr drives to do so), then open the IFO file; but it says that it cannot read the first vob file (which is length zero anyway). Selecting another episode on the same DVD where the vob file is not zero, DVDx cause a fault error and close.
Tried also with Flaskmpeg, pretty much the same: problems parsing the vob file and fault error where the vob file is not zero.
Note that with dvd2avi there was no problems at all to create the d2v file!
This DVD must be cursed!!!
Any further idea?
Thnks and ciao

Yes I said 1.7 so why did you use 1.8
If you are only ripping some of the DVD, then the VOB file is out of sequence by the sounds of it, its trying to load VOB 1, when you have only ripped VOB 2 ?? etc
Anyway, it would be easy to rip "Everything" then when you load DvdX you can move the slider to where you want to start from, then hit cancel when it reaches the bit you wantOr just load a VOB and do them one at a time
I dont know about 1.8, I do know that V2 renames the VOB files, then the Ifo is looking for something thats not there.
Oh, and you dont need to scan the VOB in DvdX for macrovision key, as smartripper has already de-protected the VOB, just in-case that causes a fault.
I started with V2, but went to V1.7 and it works with everything I have ripped with smartripper.
Originally with Jurassic Park (4 disk set) DvdX V2 failed on disk 3, so did it with 1.7 and since then all new disks work fine. -
King,
Well that was a bit silly of me, I suppose. Ripping the whole DVD in place of one episode only, then using DVDx on the whole bunch of vob files on the HDD is obviously the solution.
After doing so, everything works fine, even with 1.8 (but from now on I'll use 1.7 following your recommendation). I have already encoded 3 episodes, quality is perfect no probs during enconding or the other processes and specially NO REPEATED FRAME!!!
Still I have to understand why Smartripper when ripping one single episode (or angle) sometimes creates a vts_1_01.vob file with length zero.
Thanks a lot!!! 8)

Hi
Well SmartRipper defaults to all the large VOB files, and assumes the first ifo is the one that contains all the information for the movie. If the DVD has several separate films you will have a ifo for each one.
Was you using file mode, getting VOB 2, but Ifo 1 ?
If I am ripping one of those disks, I still rip the whole lot, it only takes a few minuets, then sort out what I want later. Its easy with the source range to get what you want -
King,
Using MOVIE and pointing to each separate angle, two out of three episodes generated a zero length first vob file (vts_1_01.vob or something similar), which DVDx just refused to read. Using FILE of course the whole thing is ripped.
Now I have another problem: after burning the VCD the quality is not really good: fast motion scenes show squares and pixels. Reading the Forum I found that it is probably due to the fact that I did not use any Plugin with DVDx. Apart from Panasonic MPEG1, which is not free, is there any other decent plugin (free) which will do the job? I read about SLX and CCE but it seems that the opinions are not on the same line.
Or is there any setup for DVDx to improve the quality? With TMPGenc apart from the problem with the repeated frame, never had quality loss problem.
Thanks and Ciao

You got ~20fps output in dvd2avi because you had forced film turned on, if not then this is one messed up dvd. Forced film should not be used on pal sources. When TMPGEnc converts from one framerate to another it simply repeats or decimates frame to make up the difference and this will always lead to jerky movement.
So uncheck forced film and make a new project file then load this in your encoder of choice and encode to 25fps. I think you will get much better quality using TMPGEnc than DVDx, but that is just my opinion. -

Motion Search High (Slow) (might be your problem)
DCT/iDCT P4

Thats about it, frame rate on convertion is around 23fps with those settings. I have used NTSC 23fps and NTSC 29 fps to PAL with no problems, PAL to PAL is better on fast pan's, but on slow pan's on NTSC they are fine on My TV/DVD
Little dark on the PC, but very clear and bright on the DVD/TV -
Unchecked Force Film on DVD2AVI. It worked all right!
Since when using CladDVD you have to check Force Film in order to invoke DVD2AVI and create D2V and WAV files, I thought it was the same when using DVD2AVI after Smartripper. Wrong.
Now all is fine, but I had to rip the whole set of 8 DVD again (third time in 10 days!) on my HDD because using the previous set of ripped VOB files with the option FILE on Smartiripper caused problems of audio sync with Tmpgenc. I suppose this was due to the DVD Start Menu, which was included in the ripping of the whole DVD (in place of episode by episode); in fact the Audio delay was almost the same as the start menu running time.
So all's well...
Thanks to all and Ciao
