  1. I was looking thru the list of players, and these 2 players seem very similar, except for a bitrate thing with xvcds... so is it worth it to buy the 444 over the 440? Anyone made this decision B4? Which one would you choose? PLease, help, as I'm gonna buy something 2morrow on boxing day in Canada (post-xmas sales).

  2. Get the 444 if you have a good HDTV or a TV that supports progressive scan or if you are planning to get one of these. It's a little more than the 440, but the 444's progressive scan makes it very much worth the extra cash. Trust me, you won't believe how much a difference progressive scan makes.

I read on the DVD player comparison page how the 444's performance regarding progressive scan is very poor compared to other progressive scan DVD players, but cannot confirm this (yet). This is pretty relevant to me at the moment since I'm about 4-5 hours away from making my first DVD player purchase and was considering the 444 because of the apparent support for a great variety of formats.

  4. Since the 444 isn't true progressive scan and is considered to be "horrible" by those who have tried it on a progressive scan screen, there are only 2 factors to consider.

Price and color. 444 is $20-$30 higher than the 440. The 444 is silver and the 440 is black.

  5. Don't forget the multifunction remote! (444 able to control your TV, 440 can't).

Also comparing the specs here in the DVD comparison chart, it looks like the 444 might be able to pump out more Mbits per XSVCD.. but not sure.
