divx/vcd on dreamcast

I have been encoding vcd/svcds for a while now, and I knew all along that it is possible to play movies on a dreamcast. So I finally dusted up my kids dreamcast (long forgotten since the ps2 and x-box came along) and decided to experiment. Of course, the first place I came was here to the forums.

I checked out the tools section and downloaded the program that is supposed to allow me to play a/v files. Well, I found all this information about diskjuggler, Nero, bootable cds and all that. What I did not find is a straight forward "how-to" guide that will get me started. I mean, I am willing to do the homework, but I just don't know where to start!

so, if I understand right, first you have to make some sort of cd using the tools that are relevant. then, if you insert the cd into the dc, it will set, or load, (or whatever it is that it does) the information into the console that will allow it to read the files. and it can only read certain files, divx 3.11, and a couple other formats but not many.

I know that this is probobly kind of a lame explanation, but is it close? Now, someone out there, please point me in the right direction. In the meantime, I will do some homework. and all who respond, also let me know: Is it worth it?

I basically want it for my kids to watch movies on. so that they will leave my stuff alone!

You can play Vcd on the dreamcast with a boot disk for vcd's. If you look hard enough you can find it on the net. The divx avi files however are different. You have to write part of a program on a cd with the movie you are burning. It's on the net too.

It's not worth it. Dreamcast isn't fast enough to play the movie so the audio gets out of sync and pixel's pop up.

i use dreamcast vcdplayer, and my vcds play fine with occasional pixels and audio stays in synch. my kids love it. they also play gameboy games supernintendogames. atari games and sega genesis games on the dreamcast, and you can put over 1000 games on one disk, talk about getting the kids to leave you alone, give them a thousand games and they will. go to www.dcemulation.com
