I'm capturing my old (PAL) VHS tapes at 352x576 using AVI_IO or Virtualdub, burning them to DVD using Ulead DVD Movie Factory, and getting jitter when playing them back on my standalone dvd player. It's most noticeable when e.g. there is stationary lettering on screen.
I have tried varying different aspects of the procedures to see if the cause appears, but haven't had any luck yet. I have tried loading the AVI into TMPGENC, and also frameserving with Virtualdub and Avisynth, and it persists. If I de-interlace it, the problem goes away. I let the TMPGENC wizard detect which field goes first, and it usually goes for field B (I've changed this to A as an experiment with my usual test tape and it proves that field B in this instance is correct).
I am using Brooktree drivers (v. 4.188) with either a Kouwell 607a card, or a Pinnacle pctv/rave card, and have also experimented with the generic wdm drivers. But it continue to be a problem.
I am possibly overlooking something, somewhere, perhaps even something obvious! So if anyone could offer advice on this I'd be most grateful. Any thoughts?

In your post you say that if you deinterlace the film the problem goes away. Haven't you then solved the problem?

Thanks for your comment. You could say that! But I guess I was hoping to keep it interlaced to preserve the quality. I'd be interested in how many people de-interlace their stuff.
I read something on the divx digest site, I think, that said if you want to preserve the quality capture both fields at say 352x576, then de-interlace it, which surprised me because I was under the assumption that people were keeping it interlaced.
I found that using e.g. an avisynth script and using something like the sharpen, or unfilter filters increased the problem. De-interlacing and then using these filters seems OK, so I may have to go that way.DA -
As someone once said: Never give up, never surrender!
I've been persevering with this over the months and have discovered that the image looks great in AVI_IO and VIRTUALDUB in Overlay mode, but horizontal lines (which appear as jitter when viewed on a TV) appear during preview mode. Of course, you can only capture during preview mode, because you get an error message if you try to capture in overlay mode.
Is there any way to capture in overlay mode? Is it a down to the power/capacity of your pc, or is it down to the drivers? Does anyone know why this problem occurs in an avi captured in preview mode? (I'd also like to try the latest BT878KHF vfw drivers, if anyone knows where to get them.) TIA for any ideas/comments!DA
