Trying my first rip. I have a .avi file. I have seperated the wav file in virtualdub. I am trying to encode the video in TMPGE and it gives me an error that it does not support the file. I think I need to do something with the codec. I downloaded the divX codec 5.0 pro. All the help sights mention that to get the avi to convert correctly to MPEG I may need to install a codec. They take for granted that I know how to do this or what it is for that matter. Any help would be appreciated. I have been stuck at this step for 3 days!

You might have your DivX5 installed but it does not support earlier versions like DivX3 - that is why the best thing is to install Nimo Codec Pack (latest version is 50 Build 8) as it is a collection of all the codecs you might need. Here's the webpage you can get it from http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/

You need to make sure you have the supporting codec's. Installing DivX 5.0 is of not use at all if the original was made with something else. Despite the AVI playing OK, you still need the correct codec's for both video and audio.
You need to know exactly what codec was used, and know whether you have it installed.
Since you have loaded the AVI into Vdub, you should click File > File information.
That may say "unknown" (You have a codec missing)
The most popular way to sort the problem out, is to install all the codec's, including ones you don't need, with a "Codec pack" and the most popular codec pack wasthe "Nimo codec pack" however with the latest release, the DivX 5.02 has spywear, so is the one you download from divx.com
Nimo lite does not have all the codec's, but there are no spy's
Better to search for codec's on Kazaa (I heard there is one called the KJ codec pack)
You don't need to separate the audio of an AVI to convert in TMPGEnc, the program will handle VBR, AC3 and a lot of other problems (So long as you have the codec's), so unless you have a particular problem, convert the AVI without saving the audio. You can always test a little before doing the who lot (use the source range to jump to the middle of the conversion for a test)
