PAL / NTSC Whats the difference?

I am currently trying to encode "We were soldiers" to DivX 5 using a guide that says it is intended only for PAL not NTSC. How do I find out which one my vob files are?

I can't get the screenshot of the stats window from DVD2AVI to display for some stupid reason but it says the following


Aspect Ratio: 16:9

Frame Rate: 23.976

Video Type: FILM 99%

Frame Type: Progressive

It is NTSC Film, PAL is 25 fps, NTSC is 24 or 30.

So what would make a guide written for PAL different from a guide written for NTSC?

It would differ in the following : frame rates , screen size.

example VCD - PAL = 352*288*25 fps ---------- NTSC = 352*240*29.97fps (23.976 film)

Otherwise the guide should be compatible.

I am encoding to DivX 5 though, so can't I use a higher resolution that 352x288?

yes, you can use whatever resolution your heart desires. just don't go too high or else you will see some artifacts and that isn't good. When I make a DivX 5 movie i generally use, when the calculated bitrate is around 800-1100, 640x###. The ### being the right number to make the proportion(aspect ration) correct. Get a bitrate calculator to calculate your bitrate, the one here:http://www.divx-digest.com/software/advanced_bc.html will also calculate your proportion.
