  1. hey All,

I am just starting out in capturing, and I guess I need to start this off right.
    I run WinXP Pro on an XP1600+, PC2700 with a TV2000xp card
    I currently have a 40GB 7200rpm Barracuda(ATA100)(FAT32) and an 80GB Maxtor D540X 5400RPM (ATA100)(FAT32). partitioned as follows:

    Barracuda-(FAT32)
    C Drive - OS
    D Drive - Apps
    E Drive - MP3's-Pics
    F Drive - Games

    Maxtor - FAT32
    G Drive - Game Data
    H Drive - Misc Data
    I Drive - Misc Data

    Here are the questions:
    1) Assuming I convert my Maxtor to NTFS, is it fast enough for capturing/encoding??
    2) Will my games (FAT32 on F be able to access my data (NTFS on G??
    3) Is it better to run my capture programs from D: or G??

I was thinking of changing the 3 partitions on the Maxtor drive to 2....one for game data (25GB) and one for capturing/encoding(55GB).... if this will work...?? If not, I could keve the 25GB at FAT32 and convert the rest to NTFS???
    thx

I use win2k I have 3 partitons formated as NTFS and 1 fat32(fat32 in case I need to use a win98 boot disk)Win XP reads all file formats, capturing is no problem, and it's a lot more stable with NTFS. As for gaming I can't say for sure they will work well, there's one way to find out, try it!

    Good-Luck

5400 is more than fast enough for DV or MJPEG capture, but would be inatiquite for full frame uncomressed or huffyuv. As for space even to most demanding codec is 7-13gb/hr capture and 15/hr for huffyuv temp files for 720x480 @ 29.97. You may or may not need the temp files, so you have between 2-8 hrs of capture time.

Not too shabby. Encoding times will vary based on filtering and output resolution.

  4. I have two hard drives on my system except that I'm using NTFS on my faster hard drive 7200 and fat32 on my slower hard drive 5400. My computer is slower than yours but I noticed a substantial difference in capturing. I'm using DV (firewire with my sony and Ulead software). I'm dropping a lot of frames on my 5400 than my 7200 hard drive (usually 0 frames). Therefore, I always capture with my 7200 and then do my work on the 5400.

  5. I was afraid you all were going to say that....
I want the best pic/sound (60 minutes) I can get on one CDR. I am just capturing off the Cable input.

Since I have a TV2000XP, it seems that VDub is out of the question since there is not a good enough VFW>>WDM wrapper.

I was going to use Huffy...but am still a little uneducated on the encoding part....VBR, CBR, sharpness, filtering, etc. Also, it looks like my 5400RPM drive might be too slow for really good TV capture using Huffy.

Geeez...I didnt think it was going to be this difficult, but I am a perfectionist and the closer I get it right the first time, the less amount of times I will have to do it....

    Any software recommendations for encoding/capturing???

    thx

    Mark,

as a perfectionist/svcd person I understand. A 5400 is fine. Huffyuv is not manditory. The only thing you really need is a good program that can cap at 720x480 to MJPEG without loosing sync over an hour or so.

  7. Snowmoon,

any hints as to what this program might be???
I have been talking mainly of video....
I might need a lil sound info also...
I am capturing off of analog cable..

Will the "program" I use do its own sound capture(I assume) or do I need to somehow use my Audigy card???(after running a line from Card out to Audigy in)

I am a sponge right now trying to soak up a lot of info....

At least you have given me a starting point for a Vid Codec...
    thx
