  1. I have a question, recently i got Back to the Future 2 in SVCD and the quality is so amazing and its on 2 CD's. I wanna know how is it that people encode svcd's and fit 'em on 2 cd's and get 'em to look so good? When i encode svcd it doesnt fit all the time and the quality of my movies arent good. I feel like theres someting im missing. Can someone help me out? ill gladly cut a piece of a moviie and send it to you so you can give me some adivce. I have quite a few avi's that i want to convert to svcd's.

    Thanks in advance,

Assuming they have a clean input source, the key is multipass encoding.

Your encoder and how you use it makes all the difference. First of all always maximize bitrate that will use up all the space on both discs. I use CCE to encode, 4-6 pass. The quality of my encodes equals or surpasses any commercially produced SVCDs. A good tool that will use all the space up on your CDs is DVD2SVCD. I recommend using it with CCE as your encoder. You can configure it for the number of discs to use in the "bitrate" tab.

You can get exceptional results with TMPG. But you need to use 2-pass VBR (if you have time on your hands) or CQ (but you will not be able to predict the filesize).

Either method used with min bitrate=300-700, max bitrate=2520 will yield excellent results. With 2-pass VBR go for 50-60 minutes per CD. With CQ encode at quality setting 75-85. There are other things you need to do, such as matching framerate, but basically this will produce quality, from a good source (either DVD or good quality Div.)

I everybody keeps saying to use 2pass when making svcd. but I just started making svcd ( ive made 3 or 4) and I put about 60 min max on a disk using CBR. I have been blown away at the quality when compared to the VCD. Im never gonna make another VCD in my LIFE!!!!

i made a svcd at cbr of 1700 and it looks close to what the dvd did.

    Conclusion:

I love SVCD and CBR works for me!!
