I downloaded sp3 a while ago, but I've avoided installing it, due to the mixed reviews that I've read about the patch. Overall, the response was 50+/50-.

Is anyone running Windows 2000 with service pack 3? Any compatability issues?

I don't have a problem with Win2000 SP3 at all. I installed it over a month ago. It is running very well and still pretty fast using pentium 4.

I have no compatability issues at all. It is only the Sony CD-Writer is having compatability problems. As the Sony CD Burner is new, it is only because the CD Burner applications are not up to date. Nero 5 won't work and may get Adaptec Easy CD Creator 5 and DirectCD sometime soon.

My advice for WinXP users is don't install WinXP SP1 without knowing what might happen to your computer. It is a risk for all and best to backup your files. A disaster for me and I have to get the computer back to the factory settings or get Windows 2000 for it.

    In that case, any benefits?

Microsoft describes the service pack with the usual speil about "improved security and compatability, blah, blah." My computer runs perfectly with sp2, but I am still curious about sp3.

My Windows 2000 was originally as SP2 with the CD Installation. There isn't much difference from SP2 to SP3.

If you are not sure and uncertain. It is best to leave the computer as it is and research on what Microsoft has done. On their web site they should provide a list of fixes and improvements.

    Check out here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q320853

It depends on your computer and what you got with it. A lot of these may not help you and won't make any difference. There may be of some benefit. Be careful as I am having a really bad experince with WinXP SP1. So, similarly with caution with Win2000 SP3.

I know you are doing the right thing is to ask and question in this forum.

It is up to you and good luck.

Well, curiosity got the best of me and I plunged in. Thanks for that link. I've only been able to find general information about the sp3 fixes, thus far. I wanted to solicit the opinions of the people here, because we all share a common interest in video editing. Nothing like first hand opinions.

Everything seems to be working fine. I haven't done any prolonged tests, so time will tell.

The only problem I noticed after installing it was that a piece of software that required a patch to run in Windows XP stopped working until I installed that XP compatibility patch.

You are on the wrong OS; this concerns Windows 2000. I know what you mean adding a patch for a program to run. I did have that experience with Norton's AntiVirus 2001.

Microsoft has just fixed the compatibility issue with NAV2001 with the updated WinXP SP1. I was required to download a patch from Symantec Corp for it to work in WinXP new version. The patch is for a Symantec shared file named: sevinst.exe. NAV2001 with the patch won't work well together with WinXP SP1.

This was the first disaster in my WinXP computer over a week ago. The damage was done to my home network settings and the system became corrupt. So, I have to uninstall the NAV2001 and WinXP SP1 as well. I am having a second disaster at the moment and just about to get the HD re-formatted and restored to the original. I will have to revert the computer back to Windows 2000 as I am having a lot of problems with WinXP. WinXP is a pain on a lot of issues. I have enough!

No, actually I really do mean Windows 2000. After installing that last service pack MovieStar (I have a Dazzle DVC2) stopped working. It requires a patch for XP compatibility, I installed that patch (faster than trying to uninstall the service pack and get things going again, and no harm in trying) and it started working again.

I'm guessing that MS is starting to roll XP technologies in to 2000 service packs, just like they added some 2000 stuff to NT4 in the last service pack. Some of the software problems with NT4+SP6 that didn't exist with SP5 were very similar to the problems the same software initially had in Windows 2000.
