  1. I’m running an old k6-450 with a geforce 2 mx which does some hardware motion compensation for dvd playback
I know this is pretty low spec for dvd playback but I thought it might just be ok
DVD movies play jerky with a lot of stuttering in the sound
So I checked to make sure DMA is on and yes it is
So I figured maybe my system just isn’t up to scratch
Just for the hell of it I tried to play a VCD Mpeg-1 of Predator, which usually plays perfectly with windows media player and vcd’s play well on even a 233mhz machine
When I play it with powerdvd suddenly its really slow and the picture quality is horrible

So something is obviously really screwed up somewhere but I have no idea what
    Any ideas?

  2. You say other programs play it alright, just PowerDVD is slow? There might be something wrong with your version of PowerDVD installed. Try getting another version and reinstalling, or use a different player. (I like Zoom player and WinDVD the best, Zoom is free) If the opther programs do the same thing, try copying the DAT or MPG from the VCD to the hard drive and playing it. This will at least tell you if it is a problem with the stream from your DVD-ROM or not.

  3. The dvd drive is a 16X Liteon 163D
I ripped a Trailer from Terminator to my hd and that plays smoothly with no gaps in the sound
Any advice to improve the dvd performance?

  4. Hmm, I have the same DVD-ROM, works great. As long as you are SURE DMA mode is activated, the only thing hampering performance would have to be the IDE controller. Make sure your drivers for your motherboard chipset are up to date and the the DVD drive is the master on it's IDE channel and any other drive on the IDE cahnnel is inactive when playing the VCD. Of course it could just be the way that PowerDVD plays the VCD that causes it to need more horsepower.

Did you try Zoom Player or WinDVD?
