  1. I want to purchase a new DVD player. But I need to know whether the player will play CDR/CDRW/DVD-R/DVD-RW. I know there is the guide here that can look at, but I always seem to find somebody reporting problems with players even though the guide says otherwise.

I'm based in the UK, so you'll need to bear that in mind as not players are available here.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Indy

Unfortunately, you'll find conflicting views everywhere. Sometimes it's folks like us making simple mistakes, sometimes it's really serious problems. Your best bet is to buy one from somewhere you can return it. Also, you can check other site message boards like www.nerd-out.com for DVD player info. I'm afraid that sometimes reviews are posted by people who rip their stuff out of the box and post a review 10 minutes later after they don't connect it right.

I can't comment on the DVD-x since I haven't gotten into it yet (not cost effective and I can do great svcd 2-disc rips). However, i think it's safe to say, out of all the players, the Pioneer 343 is probably the best and most likely to do everything better on average then the rest. Thats my experience and I've had a handful of players over the last year or so and do quite a bit of encoding.

  4. I suggest using the DVD Players link here on vcdhelp.com. Put in your parameters and away you go. Most of the players have user comments that might help.

I purchased an APEX to play everything you listed. It's not fancy, but it works. The only thing it's missing is digital audio.

    Good Luck.
