  1. Haven`t been able to find anything conlusive on this. I have a DVD player made early 2001 that supports SVCD and DVD-r/ -rw, doesn`t mention +r/ +rw in the brochure but I believe these came later. Can you play DVD+r/ +rw on DVD-r/ -rw systems?

  2. Since found out that my DVD player does not actually Support DVD-R/-RW, but it does support DVD -r "video mode".

I have discussed at length with the support people at the retailer (not easy downtown Tokyo), nobody seems to be able to clarify "video mode" and "VR mode", although from what I understand "video mode" is straight capturing of a whole tape or part of, "VR mode" is when you edit and take segments, join them with effects etc. Can anyone confirm this for me?

How does the DVD player determine the difference if they have both been merged into an MPEG file?

The retailer was at a loss as to whether the software that comes with the DVD writer allows you to specify video or VR.

I need a bit of daylight, can anyone help me out here?

This is all rather confusing when everyone says that 80% of DVD players recognise DVD-R.

  3. I had an 'old' Panasonic A360 which only played Audio CD's and DVD's but it did play DVD+R(W) although it didn't even mention then in the manual. The manual did state that it didn't play DVD-R disks.

My new player states in the manual that it will play almost anything, DVD+R(W) is the only format not mentioned in the manual and according to Panasonic tech support it will not play them, but it does... And very well too.

What I'm trying to say is get your hands on a DVD+R and a DVD+RW disk with video on it and try it out. Bear in mind that you may need to set the compatability bit to mode 2 on the DVD+RW disk.

Btw. Sony have announced a burner that will burn both - and + media.
