I am just wondering what are DVd bitrates?
For vcd and xvcd they can be anwhere from 1500- 5000.
Is a DVD bitrate higher? What are they usually?

DVD bitrates can be as high as 9.8Mbits/sec, hence one the main reasons why (S)VCDs have such image clarity difference. I wouldn't recommend going to low on a DVD as far as bitrate goes since MPEG2 looks way better at higher bitrates. Bitrates on commercial DVDs will vary from one manufacturer to another but it seems to be between 5 and 8 on average.

for compatability on burned dvd's - you dont want to go to high either -- many set top boxs have problems with bit rates even over 7000
