  1. Why aren't dvd-9's available to consumers? I know that they are two dvd-5's sandwhiched together, but they obviously author with them, otherwise they would be useless. What does it take to author a dvd-9? What kind of system would I need?

    Thanks,

Do you have 20-50k to drop and another 10k per DVD run?

DVD-9 ( aka dual layer ) is impossible for consumers to do, it currently can only be pressed on a mass market run. I'm sure singles could be made, but I'm not aware of eny equipment that can do it.

Most production houses write the final data to tape and send the tape to the DVD production factory where the image is extracted, built on glass masters and then full scale reproduction can begin.

  3. Are the layers written separately, then put together? Or is the dvd-9 manufactured, then written?

  4. Layers are pressed separately then glued together.

If you want a DVD-R with 9.4 GB then look for double sided DVD-Rs. Not the same thing but as close as it gets.
