I am running a P4 2.4 with 512 DDRam and it works great for me. I don't have any head to head comparisons but it is super fast to me.

    Just my .02

  3. I have a P3 at 1.0 ghz with 256 RAM, anyone know if throwing another 256 RAM in there will make a diff?

The whole AMD/P4 thing has been hashed over numerous times by numerous people, you can find a number of such arguments in this forum. In general, a P4 is faster for video encoding than an Athlon, and the fastest P4 is faster than the fastest Athlon (currently). But a lot of people are satisfied with the performance of the Athlon, they cost much less, and AMD has been better about giving you an upgrade path than Intel. So decide how much you want to spend, see what you can get for your money, and take your pick.

More memory is always good, just as a general rule, but it probably won't make any real difference for video encoding.

    spooky,
Based on a review of these 2 processors at Toms Hardware Guide http://www.tomshardware.com
The performance difference was minimal and actually giving the Athlon a slight edge in some applications. The following prices I took from a favorite shopping portal of mine:
    Pentium 4 2.53GHz with 512KB Cache 533MHz FSB $284.00
    AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (266MHz FSB) $182.00
    .
As of right now Pentium is winning the megahertz race (this could change soon), but right now I think the Athlon is the better buy and as someone else previously stated the Athlon has the better upgrade path. Intel has a nasty habit of changing the CPU socket (anyone stuck with a socket 423 CPU?) every time they come out with a new chipset. Myself I have a P4 and Athlon XP based system and I'm happy with both.
    Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack
