    OK here goes nothing.

    I have:

    PIII - 1 Gig
    256 megs RAM
    Windows ME

When using TMPGEnc. and trying to open a *.avi to convert it to vcd mpeg layer 1, I get a "can't open or not supported message." 9 out of 10 times (it has worked once)

I know the file is legit because I can watch it in WMP.

Many people have had this problem and there has either been very vague responses or none at all.

Come on people, there should be at least one genius who can explain why this is happening AND how to correct it.

    Peace and Love to all.

  2. hey Bravo, i know how you feel, i have had the SAME problem, but thanks Sefy and the help of others they got me through it, its easy to do, when you get the dvd2avi.zip file and unzip the dvd2avi.vfp into the dvd2avi file and also the TMPG folder, make sure they are both in the same folder and run the .vfp file, that should do it

I have the same problem, and what you just suggested did not work...Could it be that I have the Divx4 codec installed?

    Hey Moneyman,

Not to sound ungratefull, but this is the vagueness I was speaking of. (You'll have to excuse me, I'mmm a i'tle slow ayyy).

1 - you get the zip file where?
    2 - huh????
    3 - double huh????

I know typing sucks , but could you go into a little more detail. I figure if we can make this so everyone can understand then people will stop asking this stupid annoying question.

Thanx by the many arms of bishnu.

i think what he wants us to do is unzip the package, and run the dvd2avi within the tmpgenc folder, anyway, the link to dvd2avi on this website does NOT work, so here is a link that does,

What I can't understand is why TMPGEnc. is doing this quirky thing. It seems like such an amazing program and yet it can't open a simple .avi file. Any one care to scratch my noodle on this one.

Well, I don't think that anyone here is a developer for Tmpgenc, wnd we really don't have a right to complain, it is free! But this error is annoying, and despite my attempts with dvd2avi, I have yet to get rid of this problem. Could it be that some of these files appear to be in Divx4 format? Could it be that I have the Divx4, codec installed on my system. I have used three different versions of tmpgenc, including the old one on this site. I tried the dvd2avi thing on ALL of them, NO LUCK. Does anyone have ANY insight on this subject?

I don't mean to come off as a complainer because yes you are correct, It is free and a very well thought out program but it seems that seeing as this is one of it's main purposes (to convert .avi files) and it seems like it works for some people and not for others, that there has to be a solution to our conundrum sp?. I would be happy with any program that converts .avi to level 1 or 2 mpeg with no hassles. Any suggestions.

  10. Ok, i've been asked to try and help, so I will do my best, and hopefully it would help all or atleast some of you, but please follow what I say step by step, and I will be as specific as I can be till my fingers bleed

    1) DELETE your entire TMPGEnc folder, if you got any Templates there that you need and did not come with it, move them to another folder.
    2) Download TMPGEnc AND the VFAPI plugin from http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_enq.html and unzip both of them into the SAME folder!
    3) Download the DVD2AVI package from the link kindly provided by valzuniga (thanks man!)
and unzip it also to the SAME location you have the new TMPGEnc and the VFAPI, and run the batch file that was included with TMPGEnc: TMPGEncVFP_Install.BAT
    4) Download the DivX 3.11 codec (i've had loads of problems with later versions and other editions myself) and make sure you can play it through Windows Media Player.

After you are done, you should now be able to Encode any DivX/AVI/MPG files without any or atleast much problems.

  13. I had the same problem trying to load some *.divx.avi files on my system (not sure if your are working with divx or not). What I did to fix the problem, after loading every divx codec I could find, was to load Windows Media Player 7.1. I know that WMP 7.1 is not the best of programs, but like most things microsoft comes out with, it will fix a few of the OS short-comings ?sp?.

I have the same problem but I have found out that after exporting in avi an edited movie with no sound with Premier 6.00 TMPGenc "f" open my file without any problems and encodes in mpg1 fine, but when I export it with sounds (any type of sound like mp3 music or original DV movie), TMPGenc gives me the same error "cann't open file or unsupported".
I try using the Sefy's help but nothing. I had an old version of TMPGenc "a" in my old PC, took that and overwrited the "f" version, now everthing works fine without any errors.
How come? The new versions give this problem, knowing that they must be better.
Hope that someone can help me with this problem.
But from then I'll be using the versione "a".

    Bye PAl.

  19. I just got my cable modem yesterday and after alot of reading burned my first VCD (from AVI) today. I got the same error messages from Tmpgenc which went away when I installed DirectX8.0. However, today the messages have returned with every AVI I try. I tried Sefy's instructions but no go. Maybe I can try an older version of Tmpgenc. anyone know where I can find one?

EDIT: Nevermind..I found the old version and it works. One other question...Is there any way to remove the letters "NB" that seem to be on the mid left side of the screen of every AVI I down load? What about removing any other lettering or urls that various groups put on the screen?

    Thanks

  20. I am having a much different problem. I can convert my .avi's, but the problem is is that when it's about 99% done, it keeps telling me that i don't have the right dvd software so it can't play back the movie. The i press ok and it deletes the conversion and starts all over again. That is very annoying. Any suggetions?

    Thanks a million =)

  21. For those that my help wasn't so helpful, can you give details on the type of divx/avi file you were trying to convert ? I have this feeling that those that are causing problems are the ones which the Audio is encoded as MP3, it's just a hunch for now, will wait your replies.

kooky_e, do you rip from DVD ? if so, do you make the VOB's into Region Free ? if not, you should try that.

  22. I've run into this same problem with TMPGEnc 12i when trying to open MPEG files. Doesn't matter if it's MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, I get the same "can't open or not supported" message.

I've found a workaround, but don't ask me why it works.

    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Goto the directory where your MPEG video files are.
    3. Highlight any video file.
    4. Make sure "Play" arrow in the Windows Media preview is active. You can press play if you want, but it's not necessary.
    5. Open the MPEG you want to edit with TMPGEnc.

There is some bug in TMPGEnc that requires Windows Media to be active before it can open video files. This workaround works everytime this error occurs, at least for me. I don't do AVI's, so I can't say for sure it will work for AVI's, though.

  23. Just as a sidenote, in TMPGEnc 12/12a, you can encode ASF files and other variants, because it was before Microsoft told the developers to stop their support of that format, so maybe that is why it is able to encode more formats then the latest versions, so it's always good to keep around.

    kooky_e,

Hay, maybe I can be of help - maybe!
why don't you try and CUT the avi's ending section (@99%) and
do a few experiments to see if all get encoded to it's entirety.
or, maybe try and just encode that small (cut) ending section to
see if you get that same (blasted) message.

Please give this idea a shot. And, let us all know. Maybe we
can narrow down to a point or something.

    K? Good luck!

    Hello all,

I just wanted to drop a note and let everyone know that I tried what Sefy had proposed with TMPGEnc Version (i) and I had no luck. I was able to aquire a copy of TMPGEnc Version (a) and using Sefy's directions I am now able to convert .avi to VCD format without any problems. I am unsure why Version (a) works better than Version (i) (doesn't really make any sense) but who am I to question success. If it works, it works.

    Happy Encoding

wow! that's weird! based on that dvd software message, i am assuming you are encoding your avi to mpeg-2. is this happening with TMPGENc? is so, what version? why would the encoder care if you have an mpeg-2 player of not? maybe it's got something to do with the trail version of the mpeg-2 codec in the newer versions of TMPGEnc. if so, you could try encoding to mpeg-2 with TMPGEnc 12a.

  28. This worked for me.

Go to Environmental Settings, select VFAPI PLUGINS tab, change the priority for directshow to 3 and AVI VFW compability reader to 2. Once I did this it opened up the AVI with no problems at all

Thankx marcovan I modified the settings you wrote and now it works fine, no error and it seams that it encodes too. I will try with a larger file and tell you then.
