Does it work in your DVD player (the original protected disc)?
Looks like an almost unplayable disc... -
Somehow the orginal I have (from amazon.com) does play in all of my stand alond\e DVD players (2 Liteons and a Philips), but stick this sucker into a computer DVD drive, I receive a lot of "invalid dvd structure" messages.
I wonder how the hell the DVD "knows" it is being played in a standalone versus a computer DVD drive.
Anyway, DVDfab took care of it, it took about 3 minutes for the DVD to load into the program but it worked, perfect backup.
CloneDVD could not do it. Or unless someone knows a trick to get it to work. -
There are two possibilities, individually or in combination, that could cause this.
The more likely answer is "Reservation Road" was released less than a week ago, so this may simply be yet another new variation on the studio's misguided "break a DVD into a million random clips" protection schemes. If that is the case, CloneDVD/AnyDVD will release an update to deal with it shortly, as will most other decryption providers.
The other possibility is the disc is very faintly scratched in ways you cannot see. I have noticed this occasionally on DVDs I buy online: during shipping they rub against the inside of the case, and a brand new sealed disc can be rendered "unreadable" on backup software by these near-invisible scratches or marks.
DVD players, on the other hand, will try to plow thru anything to decode a picture, which is why damaged or poorly-authored discs will often seem fine on a player but raise all sorts of error alarms on a computer. It is kind of bizarre that eleven years after the format was introduced, DVD computer software still identifies scratches and mars as "illegal dvd structure" and stop cold, while standalone players identify scratches and mars as minor hurdles.
