  1. I used to adding subtitle using Vobsub, but for this particular movie, I received an error message "locked DVD or missing Vob". I tried Subrip, it can read the subtitle, but I don't want to use OCR for Chinese characters, it is too much job. What other options do I have? Thanks,

Use subrip to extract the subtitles to BMP files instead of OCR.

I don't know anything about the tools for making permanent subtitles, when I do subtitles it's always selectable subtitles on an SVCD.

Use subrip to get a directory of BMP files. Save the text file in Phillips SVCD Designer format. Open the .sub file in a text editor and delete everything above the list of filenames and times. Use winsubmux to add the subtitle stream to your movie file. Burn and test.

One problem I've seen is that if the bitrate goes too high the DVD player can have problems displaying the subtitles. Subtitles use part of the available total bitrate, but how much depends on how large your subtitles are. I think I remember seeing that fitcd could estimate it.
