  6. Read the forums again. The answers are all there...

    - VCDXRIP is free as it is part of VCDImager.
    - the Nero5.5 demo is free too.

The TMPGEnc encoding, + multiplexing + hex editing method is probably okay (i.e., compliant enough that it will work with everything).

  7. I have a method for creating real mpeg stills compatible with VCDImager, but it only works for SVCD. It also requires I-Author, which may be hard to get a hold of. Just in case it might help someone, here it is:

    1) Encode a .bmp (or other graphics file) with TMPGEnc as a single I-frame. Make it a video only (i.e., not a system) stream; you can use 480x480 or 704x480 resolution for NTSC, 480x576 or 704x576 for PAL, either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. For the bitrate, don't exceed the maximum bitrate of the videos on your disc. The frame rate can be 29.97 or 23.976 w/3:2 pulldown for NTSC, and 25fps for PAL. You should end up with an .m2v or .mpv file.

    2) Run I-Author's muxing tool (you don't actually have to start I-Author to do this--you just run the mux.exe program). Mux your file from TMPGEnc as a .ps stream, low resolution still picture (E1). Use lo-res even if your picture was 704x480 or 704x576. Rename the resulting .ps file to have an .mpg extension.

    3) Run "vcdxminfo" (from VCDImager) on the .mpg file as follows: "vcdxminfo --generic-info myfile.mpg". This will show you exactly what you have ended up with. You should see the correct resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and a flag that says your stream has an id of "E1" and that it is a still picture.

You can now use this file with VCDImager to create SVCD stills. VCDImager will give you a warning that the stills do not contain user scan data. However, I don't think this will cause a problem in any player. I believe that the author of VCDImager is trying his best to maintain a strict compliance with the standards (which is good!) but you shouldn't worry about this message.

  10. ...not exist yet!

I'm actually waiting for mjpegtools (originally for linux) to implement it, then I'll try to build them for win32...

at least the multiplexer should be easy to build, which would surely help...
