  1. Hi all... I only got a DVD player on my computer, so I want to buy a standalone one, but I'm not sure which brand is best!

Cuz I've heard that sony doesn't play CD-Rs very well? and that Panasonic ones do play VCDs, but aren't very good at playing SVCDs?

So I just want to know which brand of DVD players are good at playing both VCD and SVCD?

    Thanks for any help

Pioneer's are great for playing standard compliant disks. VCD, SVCD, PAL, NTSC, DVD all with superior visual quality. It does OK on non-compliant VCD up to 2600kbps.

    I have a DV-333 ( 2yrs old ) and it's great.

You can also check the DVD players list for the most highly rated.

  3. yea pioneers have excellent vcd /svcd playback as i have a 333 and a 343 but be prepared that some of those older pioneer models choke on some dvd-9 movies out there.

i actually called pioneer about the problem and customer support recommend that i bring in my 343 for a hardware/circuit upgrade to play the unplayable dvd's.

Funny... I have never had one glitch with my 333. It has a slightly longer layer change than I would like, but the quality otherwise is great. I had tried an apex 1500, but it felt so flimsy and the video quality was not all that great.
