  1. I'm getting a Panasonic DMR-E30 and was wondering what the deal is on backing-up from various sources. Basically, I want to: (1) Back-up old VHS tapes (2) Back-up some DVD-Rs and copy-protected DVD-5s and (3) back-up from pay-per-view digital TV events (which are broadcast with macro in the UK).

I have a separate DVD player, so is my answer to all three of these simply to get a standard macrovision disabler, or will I need a certain type for each source (video, DVD, digital TV)...?

You need something deactivate both Macrovision (for DVD and VHS), and CGMS (for some DVD).

It's actually often cheaper to get a Macrovision free/CGMS free DVD player than an external box to remove Macrovision and CGMS though.

For VHS, any simple Macrovision filter should work, but YMMV in terms of quality.

  3. What DVD players are macro/CGMS free?

  4. In the UK, the Acoustic Solutions players from Richer Sounds are macro-free (with a hack) and allegedly the Bush 2023 is also. There's plenty of 'reputable' dealers around that will 'unmac' a player...!

Well one cheap one is the Sampo 631CF, with a downloadable firmware upgrade. I have never used it though.

Is it only Macrovision free? If so, that won't help E30 users, since CGMS will still be there.

  6. I'm in the USA. I've been checking different sites and I've found multi region players that are macro free, but haven't seen any mention of GCMS free. Will it say GCMS free if it is? Or should I just email them and ask them if any are GCMS free?

  7. I have the DMR-E10 and DMR-E20 and the Sampo 631CF works perfect with the downloadable hack for DVD-R Backups from any DVD Source.
Also be advised that Primedisc that I get for $1.60 each work perfect in the DMR-E20. I also use the $5.95 RAM Discs from Compusa, even work great out of the cartridges, also do a search on this forum under DVD Writers and read my new posting on what this player looks like inside.

  8. I did have a web address for a uk site, selling a scart lead for £30, which took out the macro signal, so you could copy dvd`s from one dvd player to the other.
I want one too, but can`t track it down, anyone?

    Hi !

The scart lead you are looking for is called the macmaster and is manufactured by a company called Sonel. I hope it's the one you are looking for. If not there is another box available at maplin electronics for the same price, order code is QN09K

    Here are the links:
