I'm a n00b, just found this site. Never made a VCD, but I just purchased a set of Xmen cartoon VCDs on Ebay to watch with my son. I would have purchased DVDs from a store if available, but couldn't find them.

The seller said the quality is 9+, but it is awful. Blurry and horribly bitmapped images, images that skip, sound that skips. I know I got ripped off, he won't take them back, but can VCDs be good crisp quality? He said he'll replace my set with another if I ship them back. Might he have just made a bad set or will they only look good on a smaller computer monitor?

My TV is only 27" and I have a new DVD/VCD player. If I want to watch them on my G3 Mac, what software do I need?

    Thanks for any advice.

  2. Alrighty, heres the deal. If your hoping to play these kinds of files on your dvd player, i would suggest you get svcd for the most part. I have yet to see a vcd that I thought was amazing quality, svcd on the other hand if done right can compare to a dvd. The problem that you have is due to not being able to actually see it before you buy. When thats the case, its always going to be a guessing game, sometimes you will win, but most you will loose. If you plan on buying more of these types of disks off of ebay and other places of that nature, suggest to the guy that you would like to see a screen shot, or a small sample of the rip. If the quality is as good as he says it is, he wont have a problem doing that, and if he doesnt want to, chances are you dont want it.

    Hope that helped a bit.
