  2. No insult, but PLEASE read the faqs to the left If you look under 'Convert' there are a few faqs on making DivX files. Other guides can be found at http://www.doom9.org and http://www.flexion.org/vcd

  5. Well the there's a faq that lists all/most of the vocab that people use too Take a look at:

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/avi2divx.htm

    it'll walk you through everything. Here's the outline:

    1) Rip DVD
    2) Run DVD2AVI - this is produce two files a D2V video file and a wav audio file.
    3) If necessary run convert the D2V -> AVI with the VPAFI codec.
    4) Follow directions from above link

    DO NOT delete the VOB files, the D2V file is linked to them. Links to d/load all the program can be found at this site (look at the top each faq/guide or just look under the 'Tools' link to the left).

    You'll need (IIRC):
    Smartripper - a DVD ripper, there are others
    DVD2AVI - to convert VOB to D2V & wav
    VPAFI codec - to convert D2V -> AVI
    DivX codec - to play/create DivX files
    Virtual Dub - to encode DivX files (lots of fuctions)

    EXTRA NOTE - I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but as a complete newbie might I suggest that instead of making DivX files you try to make a SVCD (so you can watch your DVD rips on your standalone DVD player). There's a fairly simple program 'DVD2SVCD' that will automatically run several programs for you.
    Go to http://www.doom9.org and look under 'the guides' and you'll find a link to DVD2SVCD. You'll also need to d/load CCE 2.5SP (there's a link for it right below DVD2SVCD), this is the demo of CCE so there'll be a watermark/logo in the bottom right of the screen, I've heard there's a crack that will remove this logo
    DVD2SVCD will run:

    vStrip -> DVD2AVI -> azith -> tooLame -> CCE -> pulldown -> bbMPEG -> VCDImager

    do a forumn search for DVD2SVCD and read the doom9.org guide for more info. Luck
