  1. Go to:
    http://babelfish.altavista.com

enter this in the HTTP field:
    http://www.benis.it/dvd/agg5.htm

and tell it to translate Italian --> English. What this page is, is a comparison of CCE and TMPGEnc (among a few other encoders). There are stats and stills from the encoded files to look at for quality purposes. Interesting little read.

  2. Bah.

He does not tell us at what setting he set the CCE slider on "Complex/Smooth" bitrate allocation.

Those stills he has with the "mosquito" effect are a sign that CCE was set to allocate more bits to smooth areas.

Its a major variable, and the failure to address it (or apparent failure) dooms the analysis in my view.

It seems like a good analysis on some aspects of the encoders but I have to agree with MITSUI_1.

He used 352x288 @2.1mbits, albeit it fullscreen, 480x576 @~2.5mbits, and 720x576 @6mbits. He should not have gotten mosquito noise that bad using those settings, that is just ridiculous. My guess is that he just used the default Image Quality Priority setting. Not mentioning what setting he used here is like not mentioning what bitrate he used, its probably the most important setting in the encoder.

It doesn't translate the whole page for me. Anyone have a better suggestion for tranlating that page? I'm just posting the text manually in altavista now but its hard to make it out that way. I'd like to read some more of it. Good find though informer, that is an intersting read.

Ok if you go here you get a full translation.

    http://fets3.freetranslation.com:5081/?Language=Italian%2FEnglish&Url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww...&Sequence=core

He concludes that only at 720x576 @6MBits the mosquito noise disappears. Well the default image quailty priority setting is set for 6mbits so it seems to me he just ignored this setting, which explains the results.

One property that he does not address is interlacing.

CCE ,LSX, bbMPEG can do interlacing like a charm, TMPGeng's interlacing is ok at best. I do TV->SVCD so it's one of my main concerns. I also found his conclusions about the speed of each encoder suspect, I've found CCE to be much faster than TMPGenc and LSX's speed is extremly dependant on the search alogithm used.
