  1. I've got VCD's I'd like to put onto DVD but several hours/days/weeks of reencoding video/audio streams to mpg2 is pretty stupid for the convenience of not having to switch disks halfway through a movie.

But is there a quick/sneaky way of going from VCD to DVD??

I'm thinking if you were to create a DVD project using your authoring software like MyDVD but before burning the actual disk you replace the VOB file with the .dat file from the VCD, renaming it to whatever the VOB file was named.

I've just tried it, created a dummy project in MyDVD using a small mpg file that it transcoded and burned the project to HDD.
Replaced the VTS_01_1.VOB file with my VCD file and tried burning it to a RW disk, didn't work.

Now I'm trying to get IFOEdit to correct the IFO files but it keeps crashing when I try to fix the IFO files, I'm assuming the problem lies there, the IFO files are saying one thing but the video file is another thing. I've tried editing a few lines of the VTS_01_0.IFO file using IFOEdit from Mpeg2 to Mpeg1 but it still crashes.

I'm assuming a DVD player will see the VOB file and think "Ahh a VOB file, it's in mpg1 format but I know how to play VCD disks and they're in mpg1 format so I'll play this VOB file."

Am I barking up the wrong lamp post??

The DVD spec does support VCD. I don't know what authoring software supports it though.

  3. If you have mpeg video giles that are VCD compliant they can be imported by many DVD authoring packages as the video is already DVD compliant. The only change that is need is for the audio to be converted to 48Khz sample rate. MyDvd, DVDiT and Dazzle DVD complete all handle this with no problems. Other authoring packages should be able to import these videos also.
