When going from iMovie to MediaPipe, is it neccessary to set the "high quality" mode in QT, or is that just for QT playback?

I have found it necessary to set the high quiality option, save a reference movie, and use that in mediapipe. Mediapipe crashes, by the way, if the files involved, including the application, are on separate partitions.
Similarly, what are people's opinion on the Apple Mpeg-2 encoder versus mediapipe? Mediapipe is really VBR, correct?
