Most of the time, I can pick up on something new...But all this software and diffrent instructions is about to drive me nuts...
I purchased a new computer 4 days ago w/dvd-rw.
I have downloaded nero, spruce, smartripper, instant cd, and tmpge.
Nothing works for me....either there is no AC3 file or it runs into copyright
or my 2 time trial is expired or I just can't figure the damn program out...
Im not begging....Wait, Im begging...How do I copy a dvd? I know there are about a hundred diffrent ways and all I've tried dont work...I have even got to the end with spruceup, just for it to tell me my 2 copy trial is up !!!!!....I HAVE'NT EVEN DONE THE FIRST....
I also have dialup...so I just got instantvideo (it took 3 hrs to download)
Is it very easy? I cant get it to find any files to copy directly from dvd...I would like to try instant video first...since people said it would do everything for me....does it need to be regestered? its not and I think it told me already the non-registered version wont read copyrighted dvd..anyone got registered version?.....any help would be great.

Hello, I don't use the programs you spoke about but I know how frustrating it is sometimes to try to undertand DVD Copying from the Guides. I don't know if you are interested but I present my method to rip DVD movies, maybe you'll be able to use it.
The steps for putting a DVD movie on DVD-r are as follows:
1. Rip the movie or the entire DVD on your harddrive using either Smartripper or DVD Decrypter.
2a. If the movie is single layer then you can use Ifoedit to make it Region Free and burn directly to DVD-R using Nero or other DVD Burning Software that allows UDF/ISO compilations (almost all of them do).
2b. If the source DVD is dual layer then you need either to strip audio streams and subtitles with Ifoedit and then see if you can fit it on 1 DVD-R or to split the movie on 2 discs using the same IFOEdit.
3. Burn the 1 or 2 DVD-R at 1X with your DVD Burner.
Step 1 takes about 20-30 minutes with a 16X DVD unit, step 2a. takes 30 minutes and step 2b. takes about 1 hour (30 minutes for Ifoedit to split the movie and 30 minutes for you to fix Region, Chapter info, e.t.c.).
Final step, the burning takes about 1 hour for 4.37 GB DVD-R burnet at 1X.
Ifoedit and all the guides to use this wonderful program you can find at :
http:\\mpucoder.kewlhair.com\derrow. I personally recomend the guides on this site because before reading them I was also frustrated and all I ripped was not working to well.
Good Luck ! -
try sefy's guide which can be found on the "HOW TO " section.. i know it worked for me..

sylwood12, this applies to you and anyone else reading the forums, ok. i'm almost always on efnet, and a good part of the day i'm actually paying attention =) the nick there is the same as here. /msg me and i will see what i can do to walk you through it, ok

yes, sefy's guide is terrific, but I think it is for DVD -> VCD, not DVD -> DVD.
Unfortunately, I ran into huge problems when I bought my DVD burner and I tried to use the VCD method for making DVD to DVD rips. I got synch problems and other issues that made it impossible for me to use the d2v and wav files that came from using the classical sefy's method.
I ended up giving up on these methods, as I never got any of them to work (I tried the simple, newbie DVD9 to DVD-R guide but could never get rempeg to work and spruceup is crap, only worked twice and I couldn't reset the clock)
Now I capture my s-video signal from my dvd player 15MBps to my HD, them re-encode at 2 pass VBR 8000kbps max and the movies are gorgeous! I paid for the full copy of Ulead DVD movie factory (which is great) and that's how I do it now. no frustrations, no wasted time in front of the machine, etc.
People here think I am nuts but my time is valuable to me and if I can get a gorgeous copy with an easy (albeit unorthodox) method, I will.
They will tell you not to do it my way (and you will prolly agree, but its my 2 cents)

drewson99,
Can I ask what video capture card you are using, I have been looking at getting one and if you are pleased with yours I would like to hear who makes it and where you got it if possible ? and anyother video capture stuff you have that you like.
Thanks -
I have the *ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 7500*
I love it. I got it because I wanted to capture video from an s-video source and it was one of the cheaper capture cards that has an s-video input. It also has a coaxial input (for capturing cable tv) and RCA inputs (to cap from a VCR)
It comes with good capture software (in my opinion) and it was relatively cheap (I think I paid $199? $179?)
I would highly recommend it, and I use it to copy DVDs all the time. I downloaded the "defeat macrovision" patch for it and now I can capture from any set-top DVD player. I capture at the highest quality MPEG-2 setting, and re-encode later, but you can also capture to AVI, MPEG1, and others.
My procedure:
1) Press "record" on the capture software.
2) Press "play" on my set-top DVD player. (it is hooked up to the AIW7500 at this point - I have two dvd players, one for my computer, and one fro my TV/living room - it saves me the trouble of unhooking it every time I want to dub a DVD)
3) Re-encode the 15000kbps MPEG2 file with TMPGEnc, at 2-pass VBR 2000min, 3000avg, 8000max. (this is overnight)
4) Author/burn with Ulead DVD movie Factory.
Done. The copies are gorgeous, and I don't have to sit messing with rempeg or dvd2avi or IFOEdit etc...
The total time in front of the computer is 5-10 minutes.
Using the other methods, troubleshooting the problems, and always wondering what was going wrong, I used to spend hours in front of the machine!
Andy
PS- I also have the DVR-104, imho the GREATEST DVD burner to date! -
Can you please provide some more information on this "defeat macrovision patch"? I have the same card and would like to try your method but Ive never heard of such a program. Can you please let me know where I can get it?
Thanks -
drewson, i'd rather use ifoedit. with that you get to keep the surround sound which is important for me. it only takes a few minutes to set up and away you go. if the film is over 4.3 gb i'll just encode it to vcd. it's not worth the very long encoding times just to have a slightly better looking picture with only crappy stereo.

Please tell us where you got this patch
