  1. I have been looking for a better video solution than my current Pinnacle DV card. Today I see the Pinnacle DV200 card - you get a Firewire card plus the full version of Adobe Premiere 6.0 and some effects software. All this was $279

I know Premiere retails for $600 and is usually on sale for $500-560.

Help me see what is missing - you get a Firewire card and P6 for half of what the boxed software costs!

    Thanks, Da Kitty

  3. ...this deal is really tempting.

I suggest you check Pinnacle's website. There you'll find that the DV200 is really nothing but Studio DV card, with Premiere 6 included. But you are right, it's probably the cheapest way to buy the full version of Premiere 6. But on your original post, you mentioned you're trying to look for a better video solution that your Pinnacle DV card... so I just thought I'd break it to you.

I almost bought the card, luckily I found she had incompatibilities with my camcorder.

  4. the DV200 is no different than a $15.00 fireWire card that you can buy at pricewatch.com ...however, the ironic thing is that just like with other Pinnacle cards, it's cheaper to buy a DV200 and get Premiere 6 for free than it is to pay $479 for Premiere by itself... and I would NEVER encourage using pirated software, but if you were resourceful, you could use your regular fireWire card or buy one for $15 and get ahold of Premiere 6 for free...

Just a comment. My understanding is that Pinnacle firewire cards are not OHCI compliant (i.e. they are NOT a standard firewire card and thus require their own drivers rather than the standard drivers found within most operating systems). Therefore, they may have problems with other types of firewire devices that you may want to attach in the future.

Suggest that you look into the ADS Pyro platinum DV. It ships with a standard OHCI compliant card, considered to be one of the best in the industry (according to Vidoguys.com). It also includes the full version of Premiere 6.0, the Ligos mpg encoder which is a plug-in for Premiere, My DVD by Sonic, plus a bunch of other stuff.

    I bought it at Buy.com for $238.

Installed it without any problems in a system that had only the 1 open slot. No problems. Uses drivers found in Windows 98SE.

I've only had it a short time, but I'm quite pleased. Even with a modest system (PIII 850), I've never dropped a frame.

For $238, I thing it's a smoking deal. E.g. the Ligos encoder plug-in for Premier costs $179 alone. You can get on the ADS website for further info.

Hope this may be of value.

  6. Sounds like a good deal, even if just for the software. Its funny how you can get software cheaper when you buy it with hardware.

Just a note that Pinnacle DV cards are OCHI compliant.

  7. The Pyro solution that has Premiere is the Platinum DV - info at http://www.adstech.com/products/PYROPlatinumDV(PCI)/intro/PYROPlatPCI.asp?pid=API-530-W

    It isn't on pricewatch - CDW.com has it for $259 at http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=285774

    Has good software:
Adobe Premiere V6.0 FULL VERSION with Photoshop LE, Acrobat Reader
Inscriber Title Express, and Title Deko
    Sound Forge XP V4.5
    Acid Music Express V2.0
    LSX-MPEG LE for Adobe Premiere
    Microsoft Media Encoder 7
Microsoft Media Player 7 (BR> VideoShare Producer
    TeVeo Live
    MyDVD
    PhotoIsland.com
    FireNet Networking Sampler
    Boris Factory

It seems comparable with the Pinnacle DV200 at $237:

    • Pinnacle DVTools™ software and drivers
    • Adobe ® Premiere ® 6.0

  8. Hi. First post here. I ordered a Pinnacle DV200 because it included Adobe Premiere. On one hand, I have read that 1394 cards pretty much behave the same, regardless of their cost. Yet in this thread it seems that the DV200 is not quite up to par. Perhaps I've misread some posts. What is the relevance of OHCI? If the DV200 doesn't have it, what does that mean?

Since it's being shipped as we speak and the Adobe Premiere will be money well spent, should I consider getting a different 1394 card? Which one?

Since I'm a rank newbie, I want to start out with the right gear, so that down the road I don't look back at many wasted hours with the wrong equipment.

Thanks in advance. This is a great place!
