  1. I have an SVCD(ntsc) and wish to convert to Pal but because it has been made using VBR I'm wondering which setting to use in Tmpgenc, I want the file size to end up roughly the same so it fits on a CD, I used Automatic but the file size got bigger.

Pal has more scan lines so will always be slightly bigger. Unless you have a DVD/SVCD player that doesn't handle NTSC/pal conversions automatically the there isn't much point.

  3. Thanks for the reply Brett, I see what you mean but I reckon that is because of the VBR if it was a VCD the file size would be the same, that being Constant Bit Rate - right? I've only just started dl'ing SVCD's and I'm thinking now I should leave them as they are rather than converting like I always did with VCD's, d'you reckon nearly all standalones have both ntsc & pal playback? - ..

Your right about VCD, it's constant bit rate so no file size diff should occur. It is always better not to convert pictures if possible as fraem rate conversion as well as colour space and scan lines need to be changed, all sorts of problems can happen. From memory most players should handle both ntsc and pal, but I would check you particular player, this site has a rather extensive list.
