I am trying to capture camcorder video using ATI AIW with most recent drivers and MMC 7.1. Video quality is poor. I have tried many settings in the MMC's vcr capture including the settings here http://www.vcdhelp.com/ATI_AIW_Guide.htm
I was going to try virtualdub and it was suggested by someone that I had to use virtualvcr as well because of the ATI drivers. I can't figure out how to get the video captured as it is played by MMC in composite mode.
When I have virtualdub loaded I have clicked on capture avi and get an error message "capture device was not detected"
Any suggestions would be welcome

What kind of end quality/file size are you looking for?
Do you want to do VCD, SVCD or DVD or other?
I have an ATI AIW Radeon, I use MMC 7.7 (available on ati's website). I do DVD compliant mpeg2 captures at 640x480, 7-8mbs, 100% mes settings, 48khz audio. This gives files sizes of roughly 2gig/hr. Quality is better than VHS but the AIW does add a bit of noise and loses some sharpness of the original.

I should have indicated in my post that what I want to acheive is a vcd that can be played by dvd on tv. I had not given thought to svcd as my dvd player manual doesn't indicate it supports more that vcd. I guess I should burn a test svcd to see if it reads it.
If I put mmc 7.7 instead of the recommended vs which is 7.1 does anyone know if it will work with ATI AIW 128 it doesn't indicate that it supports that card. -
I was never able to get my ati aiw 128 32 pro to work with 7.1 so I just use the 6.x that is came with and have no problems, can't play dvd smoothly though so I stick with 640 or svcd 480 captures.

Carterma do you capture for svcd directly or use a program like tmpgenc to make the file. Anyone know of a decent freeware program to convert avi to svcd? tmpgenc runs out after 30 days and at this stage in my playing around I don't intend to buy a program.
I'm not impressed with 7.1 but my disc goes back to 1999 and I think it is vs 4 or so. Backwards therefore seems out for me. I'm wondering if there is any chance that MMC 7.6 will work with this card. -
You may be in luck...
the ATI AIW 16mb is a bt8x8 capture card. You may be able to load up the generic btwincap drivers and see if they haelop applications like vdub and others to work properly,
http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ -
I need help with how to load drivers.
When you d/l and run the driver install program does it do everything necessary or do you have to go into device manager and associate the driver with an application. Will the generic btwincap driver have a conflict with the ATI drivers ( I assume ATI drivers I recently updated have a driver for capture because I can capture with their software)?
