  1. I've been spending the last couple of weeks figuring out how to transfer my Laserdiscs over to DVD-R. I've got a bunch I can't get on DVD that I want to transfer before bit rot hits them, or the Laserdisc players I've got die. I've pretty much got it figured out, however, I've got problems with no Audio on my JVC XV-D723 DVD Player which is hooked up via an Optical cable to my Sony Reciever.

I can get audio if I hook up Analog cables and manually switch the reciever to Analog input. I can also get audio if I go into the DVD Player setup and switch the "Stream/PCM" setting to "Dolby Digital/PCM", however, this means that any commercial DTS DVD's I've got won't play unless I change the setting back. My question is what on earth do I need to do to get the audio to work like it does on commercial DVD's. In other words, have everything normally setup and have the audio come in over the Optical connection.

The following is how I'm transfering the video (I'm using demo copies of the software while I figure out what works, then I'll buy just what I need).

The hardware is hooked up as follows:
Pioneer Elite CLD-31 Laserdisc -> Canopus ADVC-100 -> Soundblaster Audigy Platinum Firewire port

    1. I captured the video/audio as an AVI file using Ulead DVD MovieFactory
    2. Converted the AVI to MPEG2 using TMPGEnc 2.5 at 4600kbps Video and 48000 Hz Audio
    3. Merged the two sides MPEG2 files into one using TMPGEnc (I had two files, one for each side of the Laserdisc).
    4. Setup the DVD with menus using Ulead DVD Workshop (I had audio sync problems with Ulead DVD MovieFactory) which created the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (empty) directories
    5. Burned the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories to Verbatim DVD-R media using a Pioneer A04 DVD-R/RW drive using Nero 5.5.9.0

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can correct my process to get properly working Audio?

I do have a full version of Adobe Premiere 5.1 which I'm considering upgrading to 6.5 when it comes out, but so far I've not figured out how to use it. But, if necessary I can use it.

  2. OK, that problem has been solved. It turns out that while I thought I was writting the disk with PCM Audio, I was writing it with MPEG audio. Since I'd already converted the AVI file to MPEG using TMPGEnc, I told Ulead DVD Workshop not to convert compliant files. Big mistake, it looks like the correct process is to set the "Video Data Rate" to match what you encoded it with, and leave "Do not convert compliant file" unchecked. That way it will convert the MPEG Audio track to PCM.
