  1. hey guys, if i have to wait, i can because i don't really need to use my computer for the next two days....

but i've been ripping the directors cut of legend with smart ripper for almost 5 hours now...and it's at 9%. yes, that means i've got 46 hours left. how can this be so slow? my dvd rom says it's 10x, but smartripper says it's ripping at 0.1x. why is it ripping so slowly? can i speed it up?
i can copy the files onto my pc much faster than these are ripping...but i know that probably doesn't get everything on the disc. what can i do?

    my pc is....

233mhz....yes, i know...but that doesn't really seem to be the problem as smartripper is only using like 16% of the system resources...
    364 mb ram....

    help!

  8. mike, if your using win98 make sure you have dma enabled for you hard disk and your dvd drive if it supports it (this really does make a difference), also make sure your hard disk is not fragmented.

I have a pioneer dvd16x, just upgared from an old 20 gig 5400 drive, to a new 80gig 7200rpm drive and my rip speed has jumped from 5x to 10x. It dosent matter what your cpu is for ripping it very much depends on your hard disk..

  10. Is your DVD-ROM drive connected to the same ide cable as your hard drive? Putting the DVD-ROM drive on a separate ide channel can significantly improve ripping speeds. 0.1x ripping speed might suggest that your system is just out of date though...

  11. I get slow rips too, about 2.2x with my 8x Raite DVD drive. I have WinXP, DMA enabled on my DVD and my 7200 harddrive, and ASPI 4.60 installed. Takes about 45 minutes to rip a movie with SmartRipper. Didn't know if there's anything else I can do to speed it up, other then replacing the drive... maybe Raite is a cheap brand... I'd just hate to buy a new one only to find out it was something else. Oh yeah, my DVD drive shares a channel with my CD-R, but not the harddrive (CD-R master, DVD slave), if that matters.

  12. hey, thanks everyone who replied. just to let you all know, it's at 92% and has taken 19 hours. not quite as slow as it was going to be...and like 5 of those hours were because i was sleeping and it had prompted me about an unreadable block, which i had to ignore. it got up to 2.5x, but still i understand this is pretty slow. anyway, dma is enabled, i have aspi 4.6....don't think it's on the same chan as my hd....? what can i say. i'm lost.

    oh yeah, it's xp.

  13. A long shot, but make sure the disk is clean I notice if I have a smudge on a disk my writer will slow to .1 until it gets past the problem area. You also indicated there was an unreadable block. I doubt this is your problem since this is the speed for the entire read(unless your disk is pretty beat up) But this is a quick thing to cross of your stuff I did to solve the problem list.

  14. Hi mike,

you can also try uninstalling the secondary ide channel, reboot and let windows re-install it. It might run faster then
