Pioneerelectronics.com product listing was no help, and niether was crutchfield tech support. It appears that previous models (ie 646, etc) were capable, but I'd like to know for sure before I order.
Thanks in adavance.

You should contact your vendor for that.
I've got a Pioneer DV-535 which has a 'dual' laserhead (1 for DVD and 1 for CDR). If yours has a dualhead too, then it should be fine.
Usually ALL Pioneers would be okay for playing CDR/W and DVD, while Pioneer has a market in burning CDR(/W).
So is Philips too.
As far as I know, all Pioneer's and Philips' DVD-players are capable to play your SVCD's (and VCD's), burned at a CDR(/W).
You just have to create (real compliant) (S)VCD, while the non-compliant (S)VCD aren't garanteed to play at the players of Pioneer/Philips.
