  1. I have an ATI Raeon 64 MB DDR card and an NTSC SVHS VCR. There is a set of tapes available in PAL that I cannot get here in the states, and so I would really like to be able to buy these tapes. I obviously culd not watch them on my NTSC VCR, but would it be possible for me to cap the signal from my VCR on my computer and convert it to a viewable format? I know a monitor can display PAL and NTSC, but would the signa it recieves from an NTSC VCR be usable at all?

    I appreciate your help!

PAL is higher in resolution (576 horizontal lines) than NTSC (480 horizontal lines), but NTSC updates the on-screen image more frequently than PAL (30 times per second versus 25 times per second)

In order to view/copy PAL formatted VHS tapes you will need either a PAL or 'digital multisystem' VCR. The signal that you will see from a PAL encoded video tape played in a NTSC VCR will be garbled (will look like you are viewing it in a faster speed and will appear black and white).

Try your local electronics/video store. Buy a multisystem VCR on your visa. Capture the tape to your drive. Export them back to NTSC tape (or VCD). (*this is the part i did'nt say - return VCR - o no not what i wanted !!!)
