dvd to vcd and divx burning to a dvdr/rw

I know there are many ways to do this but what is the most time efficient and easiest way of converting these files from the dvd to hard drive and from there to a dvdr. Also when I download a movie from say kazaa how do you get that to be able to be played on a stand alone? I have a dell demension 4500s with a dvdrw and cdrw, but they are one drive so i have no option to store it to my HD first. I have tried tgmp and cladv or whatever those progs are and they havent worked.

To clarify it more....What I really would like to do it put my movies and shows that are downloaded from kazaa on to a dvdr so that they can play on my standalone.
