  1. I'm trying to convert some tv eps that have been avi encoded, but with low audio sample rates. I've tried several tests, but all end up the same. When encoded (or remux) with tmpg, it audio comes out really 'tiney' sounding. Is there any way to convert this? I've tried as a wav and mp2, but I must be doing something wrong. Thanks for any help.

i suggest to import the audio in that case to a audio editing program

(soundforge , cooledit or the like) ... convert it first to the final bit rate (you can do that before also with sccr) add dither or shapped conversion ..

then w/ audio prog - use eq setting to boost top end with a setting you will see call a high shelf ... start the shelf at 6khz and +12dB gain ..

then add + 4 dB centered at 160hz 1 oct wide

at this point it will sound like a lot of hiss along with the sound (which will be very loud) ..

so find the hiss reduction filter which will remove a lot of that plus bring the volume down slightly ... sound forge has the best one but it is a plug in .. cooledit has it in out of the box.

adjust the over all volume of the whole audio selction as one chunk so that the max you see on the VU meter is -6dB

if you have the plug in -- you can use the BBS plug in to add some roundness to the sound ..

you might have to play around a bit with settings to min hiss but still have top end pres.

i would then master the the finished wav through t-racks for warmth.
    (its optional)
