More guess work here, start by telling us what you have, what was used to convert and what was used to burn.

  3. The movie is austin powers 3. I tried to just burn it w/ nero and when I played it on my standalone I just get the sound and not the video. i tried to convert it w/ tmpgenc and it wouldn't play well with WMP. Before i did the conversion it played on WMP. If there is anything more you need to help out let me know.Thanx

Ok, Gold Member. So you downloaded an AVI and you have verified its not a fake ?
If you cannot see the video, then it could be you don't have the correct codec installed, however TMPGEnc may need an adjustment before you can view it.

TMPGEnc VFAPI (Download from TMPGEnc site)
    Select options > environmental settings
    click the VFAPI plug-in tab
right click the "DirectShow" and select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4

When you do the above, click preview to see if you can now see the movie, if not install the Nimo codec pack (There is no sound in preview)

  7. When I had TMPGEnc I loaded a PAL template and when I tried to burn it I did PAL format. Should I try it with NTSC?

Well what was the original quality like ?, NTSC if your in the USA, PAL everywhere else

Most DVD players will play NTSC, but not all TV's will, make sure yours do if you want to try NTSC
