  1. I have a dvd rom and a dvd-r

I have used smart ripper to rip a movie (3.8gb), i used the files method, not Moive or Backup.

I want to make basically an exact copy of this (since this is my 1st ripped dvd)

Now I have the VOB files, I have tried to use IFOEdit to create a dvd but to no success.

I am using Nero 5.5. to burn the files to DVD-R, the brand i'm using is Verbatim.

I look in the help files and found an easy method though I noticed it uses the BACKUP method, can i use my vob files like this?

I am a total newbie and only create my 1st VCD yesterday (and that took a bit lol)

I realise my standalone player won't play DVD-R's but this doesn't bother my providing i can create working backups for when I buy a new player.

    Please reply and be patient
    Thanks
    Ian

  2. Okay, first question:

    1. Did you rip all the files or just the movie files? If you ripped the movie files, then you need to rerip selecting all files.

    2. Once all the files have been ripped and you are still at less than 4.7 G, use IFOEDIT to open up THE *.IFO files, one at a and do the following on each one using IFOEDIT a) Region Free - to make your DVD region free make sure to save after doing this for each of the *.IFO's.

    3. OPEN up VIDEO_TS.IFO using IFOEDIT and click on VTS SECTORS. This will update all you *.IFO files. Close IFOEDIT once completes.

    4. OPEN up VIDEO_TS.IFO using IFOEDIT and then click on the DISC IMAGE button to create an image to burn.

    5. What programs do you have for burning? If you can download GEAR PRO DVD 6.0 demo and use it to burn the image file created in IFOEDIT.

    6. OPEN up GEAR PRO DVD 6.0 and select open up IMAGE FILE, select the image file you created and burn. No need to change any settings.

The reason I advocate using GEAR PRO, is because it has produced the most compatible DVD's that play anywhere.

    Good luck

All you need to do is use the NERO DVD-Video template and drag ALL the files that you ripped into the VIDEO_TS directory. Then burn. VIOLA! Instant DVD backup! (Isn't it nice when the DVDs are less than 4.7GB long?)

However, since you are fresh at this, always view your ripped files using a software DVD player that can read DVDs from a hard disk (I use PowerDVD 4.0) and see if you really have a good movie. If so, then burn-away!

First of all make sure you understand IFOEDIT. I found this site has step by step instruction www.doom9.net about IFOEDIT. I like Derrow's guide too. They both in VCDhelp's guide section. You need to rip all files from DVD. YOU can either split into two DVD-Rs if you want to keep same quality and content as original DVD. You can also strip stream video, audio and subtitle of your choice to make less than 4.7G. I like NERO to burn DVD. This one is so simple but won't check error for you like Primo parassi 2.0. So you should play with either IFOEDIT built in player or other DVD software player. My favourate so far is Power DVD XP. Its may be little difficult for newbie but once you have done one DVD, the rest is as easy as 1-2-3. My total hour of ripping to authoring DVD with IFOEDIT is around 2 hours and compare to 5 hours(3000 bit rate) encoding d2v to mpeg2' alone I like this method alot. enjoy

Actually, with a file size of less than 4GB (which you say you have in your first post), forget about IFOEdit for now. Just rip-drag and drop to NERO-burn. This will positively back-up your DVD (and, an EXACT COPY, to boot). This is the "crawling stage".

Later on, you will want to advance to the "walking stage" buy learning how to use IFOEdit to manipulate your ripped DVDs. Take Teddy's suggestion about learning how to use IFOEdit (leave the ripped files on your HD after burning them to use in learning the program). DO learn about stripping streams... DO learn about removing unwanted options on the DVD... DO learn how to split a DVD-9 to 2 DVD-Rs... but not right now. These are well into the "running stage". You will get there, but just try not to take in too much too early.

I vote SLK's advice to be the best in your case.

    However, it's 4.3 gigs, not 4.7. (Yes, I know the disc says 4.7, but it's 4.3).

Yes, I find that there is nothing more confusing than trying to find out the actual size of your files. I usually end up right clicking on the file and clicking on PROPERTIES to find out the "true" size (right down to the byte). Also, NERO will tell you the exact file size in its windows.

But however you do it, there are only 4.7GBytes (4,700,000,000 to be exact) available on a DVD-R.

    That's 4.49GB (with a 1024byte "kilobyte").

    That's 4.38GB (with a 1,073,741,824byte "Gigabyte").

    Confused? Join the crowd.

  8. Ladies and Gentlemen...actually i do have a way you can handle that i think, what if you stream the audio and the video at the same time. SmartRippers can do that buy it self....could you just burn those VOB file to the DVDr...or would i have to do something else..the video is the regular video from the original dvd but the audio is streamed ac3 6ch format.....

    thank

Actually he said it was 3.8 GB using the **FILE** rip method of smart ripper which is defaulted to select ONLY the movie VOBs( nothing else) in which the IFO **MUST BE EDITED** if u want to play the dvd-r on a standalone player. In that file rip area u can click "ALL" to select all files, that would be the same as using the BACKUP method of smartripper.

from his post its still not CLEAR if the size of the dvd is under 4GB or is just the movie vobs are under 4GB

what u need to do (THE WIZARD) is load your dvd into smart ripper again and then select the backup button and before u rip anything check at the bottom of the smartripper window and find out how much "required disk space" is needed to do a backup rip of the dvd.

after u got that then reply to this post with the actual size of the dvd and then u could be better helped.

prassi primo is much better dvd writing software than nero.

  11. if u just want the main movie on the dvd-r then u are gonna have to use ifoedit to edit the the movie ifo file if u want it to play on a standalone

read this page for instructions how to edit the ifo file for using just the main movie (no menu's or extras)

If the whole DVD is small enough to go on a DVD-R, then by far the easiest way I've used is with DVD Decrypter.

ISO Read .... then ISO Write .... Job done.

    Cheers
