  1. DVD´s play fine, but several VCD´s (selfmade or borrowed from a friend) only play black&white, although the video files definitely are colour (checked that on a pc). It goes like : switch on telly and dvd player and see sony startup screen (colour). Enter vcd, telly shows it´s a vcd (still colour). Start vcd, it automatically switches to b&w. Stop vcd, even sony startup screen is b&w. Switch dvd of/on, startup screen is colour again, then same procedure as above.

What´s wrong with my Sony or my vcd´s ? Please help !

  2. you're using ntsc vcd's in a pal dvd player or vise versa.

convert them to your television standard. there are guides on exactly how to do this on the left. i suggest using tmpgenc.

Before you convert, I would check to see if your TV has more than one scart socket. If so, try using another one. Also check that your lead has all pins connected. Not all have, and this can lead to lack of colour!

  5. Checked the VCD, it´s PAL, so that´s not the reason. A friend of mine has the same trouble, also on a Sony. I´ll try to swap the player for another one, but before I´ll try to swap cables and/or SCART connections.

  6. ...besides, it´s JUST VCD´s ! DVD´s are fine with colour and everything. Very few VCD even play in colour, but most of them are b/w

  7. Go into the setup menu on your DVD player and try changing the output to a different one (e.g if it is on RGB change, it to composite). Sorry can't remember which one is the one that works. Yes even though I was actually using a SCART cable.

This solved exactly the same symptoms for me but with with R1 DVD's, R2's played in Colour OK.
