I can't decide which is the better VDR....
Terapin is supposed to be best MPEG1 VDR, the AMoisonic offers SVCD capability. Will the Terapin look ok on a 43" HDTV monitor? Thanks.

The Terapin will look terrible on a large monitor. Generally the rule with it is, the smaller the screen the better it looks. Discs I made on my Terapin look ok on my larger television, but they look spectacular on the lil 19" TV in the bedroom.

I hear Terapin does a better MPEGI encode than other VDR's. I am wondering tif the SVCD quality of the Amoisonic will look good?

I dont know what budget youre working with, but I would recommend skipping SVCD VDR and go for a DVD VDR. Although SVCD has a higher resolution than VCD, SVCD was merely the Chinese attempt to slow the tide of DVD upon its shores. There are too many negatives to SVCD (short playing time, lack of support outside China, horizontal resolution not part of DVD spec, etc etc) to invest US$500 in a recorder.

Yeah, but no dvd standards are set yet and there is all the macrovision stuff..i want to transfer my old vhs tapes to disc. I will probably go with a terapin for $275 until dvd recordrs become more affordable and standardized. The Amoisonic is about $450 I think....

Really don't bothor with any of that crap. You'd do much better to just buy a DVD-RW drive at $239-$247.Much cheaper than either of those VCD recorders above and you get to make far superior DVDs with It.As for the DVD-Rs themselves, there are sites out there where you can buy good quality DVD-Rs in 25 packs for pretty cheap and well worth It.
The pioneer DVR-104 drive,records both DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs.

1. I don't have room for internal DVD-RW drive, have to be external Firewire drive.
2. I would still need a good MPEGII card
