I'd wait for the new Panasonic E-30(K/S). It's what I'm holding out for (should hit store shelves around the first week of August). More info on it is available here - http://panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/dvd_recorder/dvd_recorder.asp
Also, I'd suggest doing a search - as there have been countless impressions and posts on both the E-20 and Pioneer 7000 in the past.

I've had the DMR-E20 since January and have had no problems with it.
I looked at the DMR-E30 and can't find a single feature that is different than the DMR-E20. Lower price maybe?
Also, the ram discs will only play on the recorder. The file structure of ram is completely different from dvdr. -
the E-20 is great. dvd-ram is also great even if it can only be played back on this player. hated dvd-ram at first but after you play with it you realize how good it really is. it gives same picture quality as dvd-r but it is extremely versitile and makes the E-20 a true replacement for a vcr. good dvd-r media from princo can be purchased at rima.com for about $1.12
