I have used this app since version II and now v5 with DVD support, mainly for converting avi to vcd or svcd or cutting and selecting scenes. It has nice special effects. You can even create blue/green screen effects just like in the movies. Its much easier to use than Ulead Media Studio or Ulead Video Studio (not necessarily better). You can create some variations in the basic templates when creating your vcd by selecting create and mpeg1 then choose some options like size and audio bitrate. Overall there is very little that you can change.

I don't prefer the Videowave capture function but instead suggest using virtualdub with the custom size and resolution settings etc., its ability to apply inline filters, control disk space and file size.

I must qualify that capturing has entered a new world with the development of many new apps based on the directshow filters and using "wdm" drivers instead of "vxd". Virtualdub will not work with the wdm capture drivers. It is getting more difficult to recommend capture software without knowing the other persons capture hardware chipset and windows version.

I now use win98 with "wdm" drivers for my avermedia TV98 bt878 chipset and can capture mpeg1 and mpeg2 in real time using software compression only. I have a P4 1.6 512 cache and 512 DDR 333 ram.

The apps I use are WINDVR, WINCODER and PowerVCR II for mpeg files and AMCAP, VirtualVCR and iuVCR for avi or window media capture.

I have many other apps like winvcr, virtualdub etc..... that work with vxd drivers but I am not using these right now since they won't do Mpeg capture.

Don't get fooled. Most capture apps are copies of other peoples work placed more or less in the public domain.

The vxd based programs are variations based on Microsofts sample capture applications VIDCAP and VIDCAP32 C++ routines with modified interfaces and expanded features. The latest Directshow "wdm" based programs are for the most part expanded versions of Microsofts sample program called "AMCAP" which teaches programmers how to design capture programs using the Directx architecture. Many fancy looking apps just house a nice cosmetic shell but are functionnaly just "amcap". Others have included additional functions like inline image filters etc...

The choice of capture apps will depend on cost, your capture card, your desire to capture mpeg directly (or not) and some value added features offered by certain programs (like video editing) and your need for speed (wdm are faster).

I don't post often but man do I make up for it in length!!!

  3. Create your movie, process it in the same format without compression, then convert to VCD with TMpgenc, Much better quality !
