I'm very new at trying to make VCDs that will work on set top DVD players.
I have a Sony CD-RW CRX160E (which I'm pretty sure is a SCSI).
Nothing has worked so far and I've followed all the guides and expermented on making the write MPEG 1 files.
Is my CD writer the problem?
I'm trying to view the videos on a Pioneer DV606d.
Help!

Give a brief summary of the steps you go through when you make one of these VCDs that won't play. Tell us the software you use to encode, and the software you use to burn, etc.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
My test runs
I captured some video off of a vhs deck.
I use Speed Razer editing softward and 4 scsi av drives (I edit for a living, but have yet to cross over to dvd or vcd).
I then encode the the native AVIs into mpeg 1 using TMPGenc.
I followed several guides several times with several changes for making VCDs that should play on a dvd player.
I drag the files into Sony's CD Extreme and make a VIDEO cd.
nothing has worked.
The DVD player just sees a CD rom. Something plays as the timer counts up, but no picture. -
I will recommend using Nero or VCDEasy to burn the MPG file created on TMPGEnc.

None of which will make a compliant VCD (other than Disk-copying a VCD, of course).

okay what U need to do is cut out the sony software & use nero!! burning a vcd at a higher speed can cause corruption of the mpeg but thats all.. it should still play but badly. all the other things U R doing are fine. By the way I thought sony only built IDE stuff as thats what The E stood for on the end of the drive model..
tmpeg to encode
nero to burn (select vcd)
burn at a max of 12 to get the best compatibility...
by the way what dvd player do U have?

I have made manyVCDs now, here is what I do.
I use only freeware/shareware.
I have Nero, but I like to use other methods to insure quality
Take a .avi DivX movie
Use VirtualDub to convert the audio to 44.1KHz, 8-Bit, Stereo and save as a .wav
Use TMPGEnc to create a MPEG file by specifying the .avi as teh video source, the .wav as teh audio source, and creating an output name for the new file. I use all teh default settings except MPEG1Video, 320x240, 4:3 525 Line NTSC, and 23.976 or 29.97 fps. this step takes a while
Use TMPGEnc to split the large file into 2 halves by using the MPEG Tools in the file menu, selecting teh Merge&Cut tab, & MPEG 1 Video. I do this twice to split the movie
Then use TSCV to take each half and add chapters/menus and burn directly to VCD. I have never had an issue
Send me an email if you have a question. I can send you teh tut that I wrote if you want.

what has that have to do with this thread ?
anyway i wanted to ask dscrib what capture board he is using with speedrazor as it only pretty really works with DPS or reeltime or targa 3000 or the matrox2500 .. depending on what you have -- some of these can capture directly into mpeg1 and 2 .. -
i tell you what it has to do with this thread.
as he said that his job was video editing for a living, i was giving him the benefit of the doubt in the fact that as his occupation is video editing for a living, he probably has thecorrect cards and everything else.
as i think it is highly unlikely that speed/burner are the problem, it would appear that the process may be the issue. thought i would tell him what works for me.
if you want to give me grief for trying to be helpful, then go to hell, hope you never need anything form me.
to get back on directly to the thread, Can burn speed make a difference for succesful vcd?, the answer is not really, assuming that you match teh burn speed with the burner and disc capability.
i think that as you are new to making VCD, follow the tuts very closely, as one small missed step could be causing all of the troubles, -
I have a sony CRX140E and have had no problem so far using the Sony CD Extreme program. Go to http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/crx140echdwn.htm
and download the CD Extreme update. Then go to http://sony.storagesupport.com/legalagreement.zuludlid=cdrw/downloads/cdx_manual102500.pdf
and dowload the user guide and read the section on creating a video cdis that all you ever think about?
