I used to own a Dell laptop (sold it just a few months ago to my little brother) can't say about their desktopPCs but their laptops seem pretty solid... of course I formatted the system with my own OS and lost all their stupid added in software before I even started using it. But the quality of their laptop hardware is pretty top knotch... I used to like Thinkpads alot also but the pricetag on a high end thing pad tells me they are a little to proud of their product to sell one to me.

    I have a dell Inspirion 8100

I love it, however it's broke twice from the same problem. Some links on the mother board melted.

I use my laptop alot like a desktop though. I need the mobility of a laptop and the power of a desktop.

  4. Both have their pros and cons...so it'll really depend on what they have, and what you'll be using it for.

I bought a VAIO, and works pretty well.

make sure it has firewire and/or USB 2.0 ports.

Firewill will become your only practical video input methiod. And you can get alot of nice perpertiuals for usb 2.0/firewire.

Firewire is more expensive though, if you can get a laptop with usb 2.0 ports then it would be best.

Now, you can get external 32x cd-rw's and external DVD burners so it's not so bad to own a laptop.

I recomind a drive house that is a usb 2.0 or firewire casing that allows you to use IDE devices (which are cheaper) through the firewire or USB 2.0 bus.

    USB 1.1 WILL NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I bought mine (PCG-GR370) a couple of weeks before they released the P4-m models (bummer). But anyway, I believe most of them come with a combo drive (DVD ROM/CDR-RW), mine did. The model you mentioned, I think, has a combo, on the docking station, so that will serve the purpose. However, you need to bring the docking station with you always if you need to watch/burn or whatever, which will make it kinda bulky.

And VAIOs come with firewire AND USB.

    Hope this helps.
